Today is International Human Resources Day
May 20 every year is set-aside to recognize the valuable and irreplaceable role of HR professionals in helping organizations achieve their goals.
Their functions include recruitment, placement, training, displine and evolving good welfare package for serving and retiring personnel of various Organizations to mention just a few.
In his remarks to mark this year’s HR Day, an HR Consultant who specialises in human capacity building in the area of Health along with some Medical Experts Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim saluted Human Resource Management Practitioners across the Country for their wonderful roles in securing and retaining qualified personnels to serve Public and Private Organizations in Nigeria.
Alh. Abdullahi Ibrahim who is also a Fellow of Chartered Institute Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) however called on Public Sector Organizations at Federal, State and Local Government Levels to change their present attitude to training. He regretted that even though training and re-training are often emphasised during by all Governmental activities, facts at the disposal of everyone today is that training has been relegated to background presently as no vote is provided for training and when provided in some cases it is often diverted to other course.
Alh. Abdullahi maintained that this is one of the causes of bad governance as functionaries are not well-trained nor motivated to do well on their jobs.
He also emphasised the need for training of workforce on how to prevent and treat certain ailments such as Cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and mental health balance and other deadly ailments; stressing that restricting training of personnels to the professions they belong is not ideal as everybody needs good health to function well and survive generally.
He appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all the State Governors in Nigeria to priotise training of their work-force and desist from allowing Top Government Functionaries to divert money meant for training to any other programmes or projects.
Alhaji Ibrahim who retired voluntarily from Kwara State Public Service 16 years ago as a Director, also charged all Governments at all levels to ensure that all those in their Administration/HR Departments of Public and Private Sector Organizations are fully registered as HR Professionals with the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria – the apex regulatory body for human resources management practice in Nigeria – warning that any HR Practitioner that is not registered with CIPM is a quack.
