The Nigerian Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress and Federal Government Negotiating Team have been called-upon to return to the negotiation table so as to agree on a living wage which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu promised to give Nigerian workers this year.
The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria made this call while reacting to the nation-wide strike embarked upon by the Labour Unions.
The Group frowned at strike which affect essential services delivery such as switching-off of the National Grid, banning air-travels and workers withdrawal of services in Hospital facilities.
In the Press Statement jointly signed by the National Coordinator of Group Alh. Abdullahi Ibrahim and the National Secretary Dr. Nasir Balogun, the Group stated that the Trade Union Act Section 31 forbids essential workers from participating in strike actions because of the critical nature of their duties.
The Media Group stated that even though there is need for new minimum wage for workers and enhanced pension for Nigerian Senior Citizens, nationwide strike involving essential workers is counter-productive as it would create more hardship for the citizens of this Country.
While calling on the Federal Government to give reasonable offer as new minimum wage to the labour when negotiation resumes, the Group called on the labour to suspend without further delay the strike action to pave way for reasonable conclusion of the negotiation in the interest of the Nigerian masses.
