The Federal Government has been called upon to stop petroleum marketers from the continuous high cost of fuel products in Nigeria despite the fact that oil prices have dropped to pre-war level prices as a result of ceasefire in the Gulf Region.
A Non-Governmental Organization – The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) made this call today in its Press Statement issued and signed by it’s National Coordinator Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi.
The Group noted that America/Israel against Iran war that forced the prices of the petroleum products up has subsided following ceasefire agreement between Iran and America hence, there is no basis for petroleum marketers in Nigeria to keep the price of Premium Motor Spirit in particular (i.e. petrol) to to above N1000 per litre…
The Group maintained that it is highly insensitive and inhuman for petroleum marketers to continue to behave as if nothing has happened in the oil market; stating that it amounts to economic sabotage against Nigerians for them to continue selling petrol above N1000, adding that petrol and diesel that have direct effect on common-man must have their prices forced down to below N1000.
The Group stated that since the Gulf war started over one year ago, Islamic and Christian Religious Bodies embarked on intensive spiritual devotion and activities asking Almighty Allah to intervene to stop the war. ‘How could the prayers be answered and some shylocks would still continue to prolong the hardship of our people’? the Group queried.
The Media Group stated further that reports confirmed that in other parts of the world impacted by the war of America and Iran, people have started enjoying reduced cost of fueling; wondering why such is yet to happen in Nigeria…
The Group therefore called on the Federal Government to reduce the hardship facing the people by stopping the petroleum marketers from prolonging the hardship of the people by ordering them to fall back to pre-war price of N700 per litre of petrol..
It must be stated that Nigeria’s’ economic hardship on the people would continue if the petroleum marketers are allowed to indiscriminately hike prices of petroleum products without check, adding that Federal Competition Consumers Protection Commission (FCCPC) – under Federal Ministry, Trade, Industry and Investment must act on this matter positively without further delay.
The Group commended the Dangote Group for leading the petroleum refining reform and its efforts in ensuring good pricing for petroleum products in Nigeria to relieve Nigerians of economic hardship.
It however called on the Group to champion the cause of forcing the prices of the commodity down to relieve Nigerians of serious hardship being faced presently.
